For my discussion today, I will cover placental abruption, the potential hidden danger behind an HIE brain injury in newborns. The reason for this post is a follow up to a post I did discussing umbilical cord compression and uterine rupture, causing an HIE brain injury. Placental abruption is also a way in which an HIE brain injury can happen to a baby.
Although placental abruption is rare, it still is something that families should be aware of if they run the risk of this happening. A doctor will be able to give a patient more details as to their specific risk factors.
Placental Abruption The Potential Hidden Danger Behind HIE Brain Injury In Newborns
The placenta is an important part of a baby’s development. It grows and attaches to the uterus. A baby will get needed nutrients from the placenta.
When placental abruption happens, the placenta separates from the uterus. There can be a complete separation or a partial separation. One of the main areas of concern when a placental abruption occurs is mom losing blood.
HIE is a type of traumatic brain injury that occurs when there is a reduction or cut off of blood and oxygen, which causes a baby to suffer a brain injury. If mom loses too much blood, then not only can this lead to serious injury, or death for mom, it can also lead to serious injury or death to the baby.
In the context of labor and delivery, if mom is connected to a fetal heart monitor late deceleration patterns might suggest that a placental abruption or other problems are happening with the baby.
Below are some of the risk factors for placental abruption:
*Being older than 40 years old
*Early rupture of membranes
*Infection inside the uterus
*Fall or blow to the abdomen
Doctors and nurses must be aware of the signs of placenta abruption during labor and delivery and act within the standard of care when treating a patient. Failure to do so can lead to not only serious injury like an HIE brain injury, but death for mom and baby.
