THE FIRST YEAR OF LAW SCHOOL…
My business partner, and wife Renee was in her first year of law school when she received a life changing phone call. Her father was scheduled to have a “simple” outpatient procedure. However, according to the doctors and medical professionals in charge of the procedure, a “complication” occurred, which lead to her father’s untimely death.
The official cause of death on the death certificate was essentially that he died of a heart attack. That was it, a heart attack is what caused the death, supposedly.
A WRONGFUL DEATH AT A MARYLAND HOSPITAL?
Because Renee’s father’s death was so sudden it caught her and her family off guard. As a result, the family never really did any investigation initially as to “what caused the heart attack” or had an autopsy performed.
This is usually the case for many people who call our office when their loved one has passed either while at the hospital or in the care of a doctor. Things can be so hectic that trying to find out what happened can fly under the radar.
GET AN AUTOPSY DONE AND DON’T FORGET THE MEDICAL RECORDS…
When a wrongful death at a Maryland hospital occurs you need to be sure to request that an autopsy is performed. If the hospital or medical examiner will not perform the autopsy, you can pay to have a private autopsy done.
An autopsy can be important because it can help you understand the cause of death. As I alluded to above with my father-in-law’s situation, the death certificate did not state what, if anything caused the heart attack. Was he not a good candidate for the surgery? Did the anesthesiologist make an error? All of these questions are relevant and were not answered by a simple death certificate.
