What this means is the doctor will review the patient’s history and listen to the complaints.
Once this is completed the doctor will then come up with possible medical conditions that match the patient’s complaints and other information.
The doctor can confirm the diagnosis or rule it out with other tests.
An important note here, and that is for a differential to work the patient must be truthful with their doctor and nurses about their history and complaints.
If a patient is not truthful then it can lead to the wrong diagnosis.

The second way an injury can occur in the ER is through a delay in diagnosis.
Where this issue can be especially devastating for a patient is when there is a delay in a diagnosis and this delay causes the patient’s death.
A delay in a diagnosis is exactly what it sounds like; a patient’s medical condition is not diagnosed in a reasonable amount of time and this leads to a serious injury.
A delay in diagnosis can occur for a number of reasons.
For example, during an initial screening of the patient a doctor or nurse misses a key finding which does not take into consideration the severity of the patient’s condition.
