I was recently at a Mayweather Pacquiao fight party and a person asked be what type of law did I “specialize” in?

I mean  do you want a Maryland lawyer who specializes in medical malpractice?

After he completed the question I told him that I did not specialize in any area of law but that I did practice medical malpractice.

“SO YOU SPECIALIZE IN MALPRACTICE LAW THEN?”

When I responded that I did not specialize in any areal of law this person had a look of shock and confusion on his face.

He went on further to say that he had a friend who told him that you should always get a lawyer who “specializes” in an area of law because, “that’s all that they do.”

THE MARYLAND ETHICAL RULES FOR LAWYERS…

Contrary to what some people think, Maryland does not let lawyers “specialize” in any area of law.

There are no boards or special committees in Maryland which govern or certify that a lawyer in the state is a “specialist” under Maryland law.

As a result, Maryland lawyers cannot hold themselves out to the public as such.

WELL CAN YOU FOCUS ONLY ON MARYLAND MEDICAL MALPRACTICE LAW?

An attorney in Maryland can focus their area of practice on one area of law if they choose to.

Nothing prevents an attorney from doing this or taking this action.
