Birth Injuries

What are types of brachial plexus birth injuries?

Erb’s Palsy

It involves the upper portion of the brachial plexus. The baby will often have weakness in the muscles of the shoulders and biceps. Without physical therapy muscles could atrophy causing permanent stiffness and shoulder dislocation.

Horner’s Syndrome

Horner’s Syndrome can occur when the damage to the neck leads to a spinal injury. It is caused by the disruption of a nerve pathway from the brain to the face and eye on one side of the body[i]. The baby may have drooping eyelid (ptosis), one smaller pupil (miosis)

Klumpke’s Palsy

Very rare in newborns. Damage impacts the nerves of the hands and forearms.
