Brain Damage And Meconium Aspiration Syndrome
Reduced levels of oxygen can lead to brain injury in a baby. Meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) can be the cause of a brain injury [1] if the baby’s obstructed airways are not opened before permanent injury occurs. When meconium-stained fluid is spotted, doctors must remain aware of a possible MAS condition. The inability to plan for this condition, with the signs and symptoms present, and as the condition develops, can place the doctor in a situation that will result in performing below the standard of care if the baby suffers an injury. Due to the problems meconium can pose to a baby, the NICU team should be made aware for assistance with treatment.
