How Can Doctors Treat Nuchal Cord?
When nuchal cord is presented, one of the main concerns for the doctor is cord compression. Areas of examination for the doctors are determining if there is a double nuchal cord, and the tightness of the cord around the baby’s neck. If the cord is loose, doctors can remove it from around the baby’s neck.
In various cases, doctors can slip the cord over the baby’s shoulder, followed by delivering the baby through the cord loop. If the cord happens to be too tight to move over the shoulders, doctors can perform a somersault maneuver.
If these maneuvers are unsuccessful, and the delivery is lengthened, an emergency C-Section must be scheduled [1] to the danger of cord compression and fetal hypoxia/asphyxia. If this procedure is delayed, fetal hypoxia, or death can ensue.
