Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE), A Knotted Umbilical Cord, And How Injury Can Occur…
Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy is a medical condition that involves a reduced level of blood and oxygen, which can result in a brain injury. Doctors must pay close attention when babies are victims of a knotted umbilical cord, or a true knot in the umbilical cord. A baby can suffer from reduced levels of blood and oxygen.
In some instances, with a knotted cord, the blood and oxygen will not be obstructed due to it not being as tight. Moreover, if this is the case regarding the flow of oxygen not being obstructed, a knot can be formed down the line that can eventually restrict blood and oxygen; this is a result of the child developing and increasing movements. Nonetheless, doctors must remain on high alert when a knotted umbilical cord is detected.
