Placental Abruption and Preeclampsia
When the placenta detaches from the uterus, this is known as a medical condition called placental abruption. The role of the placenta is vital due to its responsibility of providing oxygen and nutrients to the baby. An injury to the baby can happen during placental abruption due to the mother experiencing heavy bleeding which is because of the placenta detaching from the uterus. Placental abruption can be the cause of a hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy injury in a baby. The increased blood pressure associated with preeclampsia associated can cause placental abruption. The placenta can also be affected because preeclampsia can restrict the blood flow in the mother. If the blood flow is restricted to the placenta, proper growth and development will be hindered. When a placenta is not formed correctly, the baby will experience a slow growth rate in the baby, also known as a fetal growth restriction. Fetal growth restriction can impose on some babies a low birth weight or premature delivery.
