Are the doctors not giving you answers following a birth injury? This issue can manifest itself in a couple of ways. First, you can have a situation where the doctors essentially blow you off and give little feedback. The second being a situation in which the doctors give a diagnosis but seem unsure about the diagnosis, which leads to you as the parent getting little to no answers regarding your child’s care and treatment.

The purpose of this Maryland educational article is to help give you ideas for options to take regarding your child. My suggestions are not exhaustive, but should get you thinking in the right direction.

DOCTORS NOT GIVING YOU ANSWERS FOLLOWING A BIRTH INJURY?

If you are in a situation where the doctors are not giving you answers following a birth injury remember you can essentially fire them and get new doctors to come in and work with your child. You will be surprised how many parents do not think of this option. At the end of the day you have to remember that you are looking out for the best interests of your child. This sometimes means in the right circumstances that you have to get another doctor in on the team.

Before I move on, I want to stress that this action should be taken when there is clear evidence that the doctors are not listening to you and answering your questions and concerns. You do not want to just be changing up doctors for your child “just for the fun” of it.

GET A SECOND OPINION…

Are the doctors not answering your questions following a birth injury? Or better yet, in this scenario, they have given a diagnosis, which they seem unsure of, and are not communicating valuable information to you. If you are in this predicament, remember that you can get a second opinion as to the diagnosis.

A second opinion can be a real help because it can confirm or cast doubt on the initial diagnosis. In addition, the second opinion doctor can answer the questions that you could not get answered by the first doctor. The second opinion doctor might also have treatment options for your child that may have differed from the treatment options of the first doctor.

One other thing to consider is this, get your own copy of the medical records surrounding the birth. These records can be really important, as they give the picture for review of all the things surrounding the birth. Just remember to get mom’s records and baby’s records for the birth.
