Shoulder dystocia, what is it and how can it lead to birth injures?
You hear the doctors in the delivery room talking about the baby is stuck and that they have to work to get the baby free.
Shoulder dystocia occurs when the baby gets stuck or trapped behind the mother’s pelvis.
This creates and emergency situation because if the baby is not freed in time the baby can die, usually though suffocation.
However, what can occur is that the doctors in the delivery room begin to panic and use force to try and free the baby.
Improper use of force can lead to injures to the baby.
This is because in many cases force used on the baby’s head, neck, shoulders, or arms, leads to serious injuries to the child.
Doctors are taught to use certain maneuvers to help free the baby in a situation like this, none of which requires the doctor to use force on the child.
If your child has suffered birth injures such as cerebral palsy, Erb’s Palsy, brachial plexus palsy, or another birth related injury, and you believe this occurred because of your doctors not handling the shoulder dystocia condition the right way, this is what we invite you to do.
