A patient has a diagnostic surgery scheduled and takes the time to review her medical history and goes over all of the medications she was currently prescribed with her doctor. She is given general anesthesia and the surgery begins. However, something goes terribly wring during the surgery and she awakes during the surgery. She is overcome with pain and shock because of what she sees during the surgery.
Anesthesia awareness is a medical condition in which a patient wakes up before the scheduled time, usually during a surgery. This can happen if the patient is not given enough medication or the anesthesiologist is not monitoring the patient during the procedure.
Anesthesiologists have to be sure to review a patient’s medical history before a surgery. In addition, he or she must determine whether there will be any complications or allergic reactions due to the mixing of medications.
