We recently had to explain to a potential client why we could not guarantee a result in a legal proceeding. This particular client had talked with previous attorneys and was doing their homework as to the best attorney for their situation.
Because our explanation as to the outcome of the case was different than what others had hinted at, we decided to inform them as to not only the unpredictability of dealing with people who will be along the way in the process, but as to the Maryland ethics/Rules of Professional Responsibility.
Under the Maryland Rules, no attorney is to guarantee any result in any type of case. This rule is very important in that it prevents unreasonably expectations created by the attorney’s guarantee.
