Maryland medical malpractice attorney Marcus Boston explains in this bTV podcast how an error during a colonoscopy proved fatal to the female patient involved.
The patient had been diagnosed with cancer a year earlier. She noticed blood in her stool along with very painful bowel movements. As a result, she reached out to her primary care doctor for help.
The primary care doctor the patient out to have a colonoscopy done. During the procedure the doctor noticed a mass in the patient that was pressing against the rectal wall. Due to this finding, the doctor had a biopsy done of the mass.
About three weeks later the patient returned to the hospital. This time the patient reported extreme abdominal pain, among other things. The hospital performed an emergency work up on the patient.
It was discovered that the patient’s colon had been perforated during the original colonoscopy. By this time weeks had passed and the bowel leak had spread infection throughout the patient’s body. Complications from sepsis had set in and the patient eventually died.
